Belle lune d'argent

Belle lune d'argent,
j'aime à te voir briller
Sur les mâts inégaux
d'un port plein de paresse,
Et je rêve bien mieux
quand ton rayon caresse
Dans un vieux parc le marbre
où je viens m'appuyer.
J'aime ton jeune éclat
et tes beautés fanées,
Tu me plais sur un lac,
sur un sable argentin
Et dans la vaste nuit
de la plaine sans fin…
Et dans mon cher Paris
en haut des cheminées.
Composition:
Set to music by Philippe Gaubert (1879 - 1941), "Belle lune d'argent", published 1929 [ medium voice and piano ], from Les stances, no. 3, Éd. 'Au Ménestrel' Heugel

Beautiful silver moon,
I love to watch you shine
Upon the uneven masts
Of a port full of idleness,
And I dream much better
When your ray caresses
The marble in an old park
Where I come to rest myself.
I love your young brilliance
And your faded beauty,
You please me on a lake,
On an Argentine sand
And in the vast night
Of the endless plain…
And in my dear Paris
At the tops of the chimneys.
