Liebchen, Ade!
Scheiden thut weh,
Morgen geht's in die wogende See.
 
Dort draußen auf tobenden Wellen,
Schwankende Schiffe an Klippen zerschellen.
In Sturm und Schnee
Wird mir so weh,
Daß ich auf immer vom Liebchen geh'.
 
Einen Kuß noch von rosigen Lippen,
Und ich fürchte nicht Sturm und nicht Klippen,
Brause, du See!
Sturmwind,  ...  weh'!
Wenn ich mein Liebchen nur wieder seh'!
 
Und seh' ich die Heimath nicht wieder,
Reißen die Fluthen mich nieder
Tief in die See:
Liebchen, Ade!
Wenn ich dich droben nur wieder seh'!

Bestir yourselves, sailors, the anchors raised,
 taut, the compass set!
Sweetheart, adieu!
Parting is painful,
Tomorrow we are off on the surging sea.
 
Out there upon the tempestuous waves,
Rocking ships are shattered upon the cliffs.
In storm and snow
It pains me so
That I must leave my sweetheart forever.
 
One kiss yet from her rosy lips,
And I fear neither storm nor cliffs,
Roar, you ocean!
Storm-wind,  ...  blow!
If I may only see my sweetheart again!
 
And should I never see my homeland again,
Should the floodwaters submerge me
Deep in the sea:
Sweetheart, adieu!
If I only see you again in the great beyond!
