Der Ungenannten
 (Sung text for setting by J. Lang)
 See original
Language: German (Deutsch)
Our translations:  ENG ENG FRE
Auf eines Berges Gipfel
Da möcht' ich mit dir stehn,
Auf Täler, Waldeswipfel
Mit dir herniedersehn;
Da möcht' ich rings dir zeigen
Die Welt im Frühlingsschein,
Und sprechen: wär's mein Eigen,
So wär' es mein und dein.

In meiner Seelen Tiefen,
O sähst du da hinab,
Wo alle Lieder schliefen,
Die je ein Gott mir gab!
Da würdest du erkennen:
Wenn Ächtes ich erstrebt,
Und mag's auch dich nicht nennen,
Doch ist's von dir belebt.

To the unnamed one
 (Sung text translation for setting by J. Lang)
 See original
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
Upon a mountain peak
I would like to stand with thee,
To gaze down upon valleys,
Upon forest tree-tops with thee;
I would like to show thee, all around us,
The world in the radiance of spring,
And say: if it were mine own,
It would be mine and thine.

Into the depths of my soul,
Oh if thou couldst gaze down there,
Where all the songs that ever a god
Gave me are sleeping!
Then thou wouldst recognize:
If ever I strove for something genuine,
And even if does not mention thee,
It is nevertheless animated by thee.

Translated titles:
"Auf eines Berges Gipfel" = "Upon a mountain peak"
"Der Ungenannten" = "To the unnamed one"
"Mein und dein" = "Mine and thine"
"Widmung" = "Dedication"
