Le chasseur songe dans les bois
(Sung text for setting by C. Widor)
 See original
Language: French (Français)
Our translations:  ENG

 ...

Le mot caché ne change pas.
Dans tous les cœurs toujours le même ;
Il y chante ou gémit tout bas ;
Et ce mot, c'est le mot suprême !

 ...

C'est l'hymne que le gouffre amer
Chante en poussant au port des voiles !
C'est le mystère de la mer,
Et c'est le secret des étoiles !

 ...

Aimer, c'est avoir dans les mains
Un fil pour toutes les épreuves,
Un flambeau pour tous les chemins,
Une coupe pour tous les fleuves !

 ...

Aimons ! prions ! les bois sont verts,
L'été resplendit sur la mousse,
Les germes vivent entr'ouverts,
L'onde s'épanche et l'herbe pousse !

The Hunter Dreams in the Woods
(Sung text translation for setting by C. Widor)
 See original
Language: English  after the French (Français)
The hunter dreams in the woods
of beauties sitting on the grass,
And in the shadows, he sometimes thinks
he sees indistinct dancing forms.

The soldier thinks of his destiny
while watching over empires,
And in his distant memories
glimpses vague smiles.

 ...

Look at them, look again
as the virgin, daughter of Eve,
Running into the golden wheat
throws her song containing his dream!

 ...

All, in joy or in affront,
wear, cloudless and spotless,
A word that shines on their brows,
a word that is hidden in their souls.

 ...

The hidden word does not change.
In all hearts always the same;
It sings or moans softly;
And this word is the supreme word!

 ...

It's the hymn sung by the bitter abyss,
sung while pushing sails into port!
It is the mystery of the sea,
and this is the secret of the stars!

 ...

To love is to have in one’s hands
a thread for all trials,
A torch for all paths,
a cup for all rivers!

 ...

Let us love! Let us pray! The woods are green,
summer shines on the moss,
Shoots live half-open,
the wave pours out and the grass grows.
