Es kommt die Nacht, reich mit Geschmeiden
geschmückt des blauen Kleides Saum; -
sie reicht mir mild mit ihren beiden
Madonnenhänden einen Traum.

Dann geht sie, ihre Pflicht zu üben,
hinfort die Stadt mit leisem Schritt
und nimmt, als Sold des Traumes, drüben
des kranken Kindes Seele mit.
