Es treibt der Wind im Winterwalde die Flockenherde wie ein Hirt und manche Tanne ahnt, wie balde sie fromm und lichterheilig wird, und lauscht hinaus. Den weißen Wegen streckt sie die Zweige hin, bereit und wehrt dem Wind und wächst engegen der einen Nacht der Herrlichkeit.

Es kommt die Nacht, reich mit Geschmeiden geschmückt des blauen Kleides Saum; - sie reicht mir mild mit ihren beiden Madonnenhänden einen Traum. Dann geht sie, ihre Pflicht zu üben, hinfort die Stadt mit leisem Schritt und nimmt, als Sold des Traumes, drüben des kranken Kindes Seele mit.
