Mein Schatz, der ist auf die Wanderschaft hin,
Ich weiß aber nicht, was ich so traurig bin,
Vielleicht ist er todt und liegt in guter Ruh,
Drum bring ich meine Zeit so traurig zu.

Als ich mit meinem Schatz in die Kirche wollte gehn,
Viel falsche falsche Zungen an der Thüre stehn,
Die eine redt dies, die and're redet das,
Das macht mir gar oft die Äuglein naß.

Die Disteln und die Dornen, die stechen so sehr,
Die falschen, falschen Zungen aber noch viel mehr,
Kein Feuer auf Erd, das brennet also heiß
Als heimlich stille Lieb', die niemand weiß..

Ach herzliebster Schatz, und ich bitt' dich noch eins,
Du wollest auch bei meinem Begräbnis seyn,
Bei meinem Geleit  ...  ins kühle Grab,
Derweil ich dich so treu geliebet hab.

Mijn schat, die is als werkman op reis,
Ik snap ‘t echter niet, ik ben zo droef, onwijs;
Misschien is hij dood,  ligt hij in ’t graf gevlijd,
Daarom vul ik mijn tijd met treurigheid.

Toen ik met mijn schat naar de kerk toe wou gaan,
Zag ik veel valse tongen voor de deuren staan;
De ene zei dit, de andere zei dat;
Dat maakt mij heel vaak de ogen nat.

Ja, distels en ook dorens, die steken al zo zeer,
De valse, valse tongen echter nog veel meer.
Geen vuur op de aarde, ach, brandt net zo heet
Als heim’lijke liefde waar niemand van weet.

Ach, dierbaarste schat, mijn laatste vraag is:
Je komt straks toch wel naar mijn begrafenis,
Ja, naar mijn begraving in het koele graf.
Omdat ik, altijd trouw, zo veel om je gaf.
