Comme aux Saintes‑Maries
(Sung text for setting by L. Orthel)
 Matches base text
Language: French (Français)
Comme aux Saintes-Maries, là-bas,
dans l'indescriptible tourmente,
celui qui d'un coup se vante
d'être guéri, s'en va,
jetant sa béquille ardente:
ainsi la vigne, absente
a jeté ses échalas.

Tant de béquilles qui gisent
grises sur la terre grise;
le miracle est donc accompli?
Où est-elle, la Vigne? Elle marche,
elle dans sans doute devant l'arche...

Heuruex ceux qui l'auront suivi!

Composition:

Set to music by Léon Orthel (1905 - 1985), "Comme aux Saintes-Maries", op. 62 no. 4 (1972), from Quatre esquisses valaisannes, no. 4

Text Authorship:

  • by Rainer Maria Rilke (1875 - 1926), no title, appears in Poèmes et Dédicaces, in D'un Cycle: Das kleine Weinjahr, no. 2, first published 1920-6
