Wie wenn vom frost'gen Windhauch tödtlich
Des Sommers letzte Blüthe krankt,
Und hier und da nur, gelb und röthlich,
Ein einzles Blatt im Windhauch schwankt:

So schauert über mein Leben
Ein nächtig trüber, kalter Tag;
Warum noch vor dem Tode beben,
O Herz, mit deinem ew'gen Schlag?

Sieh rings entblättert das Gestäude!
Was spielst du, wie der Wind am Strauch,
Noch mit der letzten, welken Freude?
Gib dich zur Ruh! Bald stirbt sie auch.

Les dernières fleurs de l'été tombent malades,
Et ici et là seulement, jaune et rouge,
Une feuille solitaire s'agite dans la brise,

Ainsi ma vie frissonne
Dans un jour sombre comme la nuit et froid ;
Pourquoi trembler devant la mort,
Ô mon cœur, avec ton battement éternel ?

Regarde autour les buissons sans feuilles !
Pourquoi joues-tu encore comme le vent dans les buissons,
Avec les dernières joies fanées ?
Résigne-toi au repos, bientôt elles mourront aussi.
