Leise in das Marmorbecken
Gießt der Brunnen seinen Tau.
Wie das Wasser, niedertropfend,
Kreise neben Kreise zieht,
Also zittert, leise klopfend,

Schwingt euch, Töne meiner Zither,
Schwingt euch aufwärts, flügelleicht;
Durch das rebumkränzte Gitter
In der Schönen Kammer schleicht.

Zachtjes, om je niet te wekken,
Ruist de nachtwind, lieve vrouw!
Zachtjes in het marmerbekken
Sprenkelt de fontein haar dauw.
Zoals water, neerwaarts droppend,
Steeds weer nieuwe cirkels biedt,
Zo ook siddert, zachtjes kloppend,
Mij het hart bij dit, mijn lied.
Vlieg maar, jullie, citerklanken,
Vlieg omhoog maar, vlug en vief,
Kruip door ’t hek vol wingerdranken
Naar de kamer van mijn lief.
“Kan jou, lieflijke Dolores”,
- zing dat in een droom haar voor -
“Een lief woordje niet bekoren
In de schelpen van je oor?”

Gun je vriend toch nog een uurtje,
Waarin hij, door jou omarmd,
