"Guten Abend, lieber Mondenschein!
Wie blickst du mir so traulich ins Herz hinein!
Nun sprich, und laß dich nicht lange fragen,
Du hast mir gewiß 'nen Gruß zu sagen,
    'nen Gruß von meinem Schatz!" --
 
"Wie sollt' ich bringen den Gruß zu dir?
Du hast ja keinen Schatz bei mir;
Und was mir da unten die Bursche sagen,
Und was mir die Frauen und Mädchen klagen,
    Ei, das versteh' ich nicht." --
 
"Hast Recht, mein lieber Mondenschein,
Du darfst auch Schätzchens Bote nicht sein;
Denn thätst du zu tief ihr ins Auge sehen,
Du könntest ja nimmer untergehen,
    Scheinst ewig nur für sie.“
 
Das Liedchen ist ein Abendreih'n,
Ein Wandrer sang's im Vollmondschein;
Und die es lesen bei Kerzenlicht,
Die Leute versteh'n das Liedchen nicht,
    Und ist doch kinderleicht.

“Bon vespre, estimada llum de la lluna!
Com esguardes tan íntimament a dins del meu cor!
Ara digues i no deixis que et pregunti gaire,
a ben cert tens una salutació per donar-me,
        una salutació del meu tresor!”

“Com t’hauria de portar una salutació? 
A casa meva tu no tens cap tresor;
i el que allà baix els xicots em diuen
i del que les dones i les noies es planyen,
       ei, jo no ho entenc pas.”

“Tens raó, estimada llum de la lluna,
no has pas de ser la missatgera del meu tresor;
car si poguessis esguardar al fons dels seus ulls,
mai més podries davallar,
       brillaries per sempre només per a ella.”

Aquesta cançoneta és un aire de capvespre,
cantat per un caminant a la llum de la lluna plena;
i si és llegida a la llum d’una espelma
la gent no l’entén pas
       i tanmateix és tan simple com un joc d’infants.
