Es war ein niedlich Zeiselein,
Das träumte nachts im Mondenschein:
Es säh' am Himmel Stern bei Stern,
Davon war jeder ein Hirsekern,
Und als es geflogen himmelauf,
Da pickte das Zeislein die Sterne auf.
  Piep -- 
Wie war das im Traume so lieb!

Und als die Sonn' beschien den Baum,
Erwacht das Zeislein aus dem Traum.
Es wetzte das Schnäblein her und hin
Und sprach verwundert in seinem Sinn:
"Nun hab' ich gepickt die ganze Nacht
Und bin doch so hungrig aufgewacht!
  Ping --
Das ist mir ein närrisches Ding!"

Il était un mignon petit tarin
Qui rêvait la nuit au clair de lune :
Il voyait dans le ciel étoile sur étoile,
De là chacune était un grain de mil.
Et il s'envolait dans le ciel,
Là le petit tarin picorait les étoiles,
Pip -
Comme c'était adorable dans le rêve !

Et quand le soleil brilla sur l'arbre,
Le petit tarin se réveilla de son rêve.
Il ouvrit et ferma son bec
Et dit tout étonné à lui-même :
« Maintenant, j'ai picoré toute la nuit
Et je suis pourtant affamé !

C'est une chose stupide qui m'est arrivée ! »
