Da droben auf jenem Berge,
Da steh' ich tausendmal,
An meinem Stabe gebogen
Und schaue hinab in das Thal.

Dann folg' ich der weidenden Herde,
Mein Hündchen bewahret mir sie.
Ich bin herunter gekommen
Und weiß doch selber nicht wie.

Da stehet von schönen Blumen
Die ganze Wiese so voll.
Ich breche sie, ohne zu wissen,
Wem ich sie geben soll.

Und Regen, Sturm und Gewitter
Verpass' ich unter dem Baum.
Die Thüre dort bleibet verschlossen;
Doch alles ist leider ein Traum.

Es stehet ein Regenbogen
Wohl über jenem Haus!
Sie aber ist weggezogen,
Und weit in das Land hinaus.

Hinaus in das Land und weiter,
Vielleicht gar über die See.
Vorüber, ihr Schafe, vorüber!
Dem Schäfer ist gar so weh.

Daarboven op gindse bergwand,
Daar sta ik duizend maal,
Ik leun op mijn herdersstaf gebogen,
En kijk naar omlaag in het dal.

Dan volg ik de weidende kudde,
Mijn hondje bewaakt ze voor mij.
Ik ben beneden gekomen,
Maar hoe, dat ging mij voorbij.

Daar staat het vol mooie bloemen,
(Daar staat, ja,) de hele weide in gloed.
Ik pluk ze af zonder te weten
Wie ik ze geven moet.

Bij regen, storm en in onweer,
Dan schuil ik onder de boom.
De deur daarginds blijft gesloten;
Doch alles is, jammer, een droom.

Een regenboog staat te lokken,
Hoog boven, daar, dat huis!
Zij echter is weggetrokken,
Heel ver en heel lang op reis.

Op reis in het land en verder,
Misschien zelfs over de zee.
Verdwenen, mijn schapen, echt verdwenen!
De herder lijdt onder het wee.
