Il ne faut s’ébahir, disaient les bons vieillards
Dessus le mur Troyen, voyant passer Hélène,
Si pour cette beauté nous souffrons tant de peine :
Notre mal ne vaut pas un seul de ses regards ;

Il est mieux toutefois, pour n’irriter point Mars,
La rendre à son époux, afin qu’il la remmène,
Que voir de tant de sang notre campagne pleine,
Notre port envahi, l’assaut à nos remparts.

A quoi penser, vieillards ? si la force vous tremble,
N'allez, par vos avis, les jeunes retarder !
Mais devez bien plutôt ici tout hasarder,
Jeunes et vieux, afin de la garder ensemble !
Telle beauté vaut bien tels combats, ce me semble!
