Am Rhein, am grünen Rheine, Da ist so mild die Nacht, Die Rebenhügel liegen In goldner Mondenpracht. Und an den Hügeln wandelt Ein hoher Schatten her Mit Schwert und Purpurmantel, Die Kron' von Golde schwer. Das ist der Karl, der Kaiser, Der mit gewalt'ger Hand Vor vielen hundert Jahren Geherrscht im deutschen Land. Er ist heraufgestiegen Zu Aachen aus der Gruft Und segnet seine Reben Und athmet Traubenduft. Bei Rüdesheim, da funkelt Der Mond ins Wasser hinein Und baut 'ne goldne Brücke Wohl über den grünen Rhein. Note: A now-lost source, perhaps intending to censor the nationalism of the last two lines, replaced them with "Auf die rheinische Legende/ Und die rheinische Lebenskraft." They may have appeared in a concert program of Kinkel's song, but they do not appear in the score.

Il s'est relevé De son caveau d'Aix la Chapelle Et bénit ses vignes Et respire le parfum des raisins. Au bas de Rüdisheim la lune Scintille dans les eaux Et forme un pont d'or Au-dessus du Rhin, le fleuve vert. L'empereur le traverse Et poursuit lentement sa marche, Et le long du fleuve il bénit Les vignes en chaque lieu. Puis il retourne chez lui à Aix la Chapelle Et s'endort dans son caveau Jusqu'à ce que l'année suivante Le parfum des raisins le réveille. Note: Une source aujourd'hui perdue, pour sans doute censurer le nationalisme des deux derniers vers, les avait remplacés par "À la légende rhénaneè/À la vitalité rhénane.". Il se peut qu'elles soient apparues dans un programme de concert, mais n'apparaissent pas dans la partition.
