In traulich stille Dämrung ein,
Manch Wölklein hell in Westen schwimt,
Vom sanften Liebesstern durchflimt.

Der Wasserfall tönt Schlummerklang,
Die Bäume lispeln Abendsang,
Das junge Gras durchhaucht gelind
Der liebe Sommerabendwind!

Mir jetzt die Heißgeliebte zu,

Above is the initial version of Matthisson's poem "Geist der Liebe". In the Breslau 1781 edition, the name Laura is changed to Maja (stanza 4, line 2); and in the Mannheim 1787 edition, the last stanza is as follows:

O Geist der Liebe, führe du
Dem Jüngling die Geliebte zu!
Ein süsser Blick der Lieb' erhellt
Mit Himmelsglanz die Erdenwelt!

D'où transparaît le doux scintillement d'une étoile amoureuse.

Le flot des vagues se fait entendre, comme ensommeillé,
Les arbres chuchotent la chanson du soir ;
L'herbe de la prairie est parcourue
Par le souffle léger du charmant vent de l'été.

Ô esprit de l'amour, que tu conduises
