Ich wandelte in tiefer Nacht,
in tiefer Ruh, in tiefem Tod.
Mir glühte kein Gedanke mehr.
Ich wandelte in tiefer Nacht
in einem tiefen Tannenforst,
in stätem Schritt, gar mühelos,
wohl hinter einem Fuhrwerk drein.
Auf hohem Sitz der Fuhrmann saß.
Noch rief ich manchmal nachtverträumt:
"Halt an, halt an und nimm mich mit."
Doch war's mir nicht mehr Ernst damit.
Ich fühlte ja, er nahm mich mit,
er nahm auch so mich mit . . .

I wandered in deep night,
in deep peace, in deep death.
And no thought glowed for me any longer.
In deep night I wandered,
in a deep pine forest,
with measured tread, quite effortlessly,
behind a horse and cart.
The coachman sat upon a high seat.
Lost in nighttime dreaminess I still called out occasionally:
“Stop, stop, and take me along with you.”
But I was no longer really serious about it.
For I felt he would take me along,
he would take me along in any case . . .
