    Es leuchtet das Meer!
 
Und, wo ich hin rudre,
Entbrennet die Flut:
Es schaukelt der Nachen
    In wallender Glut! -- --
 
Die Glut ist die Liebe,
Der Nachen bin ich:
Ich sink' in den Flammen,
    O rette du mich!

Beloved, from there!
The night is so still and
    The sea is gleaming!
 
And wherever I row
The waters are enflamed:
the craft is pitching
    In a swirling blaze! -- --
 
Love is the blaze,
I am the little craft:
I sink into the flames,
    Oh rescue me thou!
