Mir Armen, den des Fiebers Kraft
Fast nötigt in das Grab zu sinken,
verbeut der Arzt den Rebensaft
und heißt mich Wasser trinken.
Ihr Götter, steht mir Armen bei!
schafft, daß der Wein nicht tödtlich sei;
wo nicht, so laßt, Gesundheit zu erwecken,
das Wasser besser schmecken.
Composition:
Set to music by Georg (Jiři Antonín) Benda (1722 - 1795), "Mir Armen, den des Fiebers Kraft", published 1780-7, in Sammlung vermischter Clavier- und Singstücke

Poor me, whom the virulence of fever
Almost forces down into the grave,
I have been forbidden by the doctor to drink the juice of the grape
And told to drink water.
You gods, stand by me, the poor wretch!
Make it that wine should not be deadly for me.
if not, then let, in order to awaken health,
Water taste better.
