Drin pfeifen die Vögel und Abendwinde,
Und drunten sitzt auf dem grünem Platz,
Des Müllersknecht mit seinem Schatz.

Die Winde, die wehen so lind und so schaurig,
Die Vögel singen so süß und  ...  traurig:
Die schwatzenden Buhlen, sie werden stumm,
Sie weinen und wissen selbst nicht warum.

Le fils du meunier avec sa bien-aimée.

Le vent souffle si doucement et si horriblement,
Les oiseaux chantent si tendrement et si tristement :
Les amoureux qui bavardent se taisent,
Ils pleurent et ils ne savent pas pourquoi.
