Es rauschten die Wogen Im Strome dahin, Zu Thale wir zogen Mit lustigem Sinn. Die Glocken erklangen Her über den Rhein, Im Schifflein wir sangen Beim goldigen Wein. O sonnige Berge, o duftiges Thal, Du Winzer, du Ferge, Ich grüß' euch zumal!

The waves surged Away in the river, We travelled to the valley With a merry spirit. The bells rang out Over the Rhine; In the little ship we sang While drinking golden wine. Oh sunny mountains, oh scented valley, Ye vintner, ye ferryman, I greet you particularly! Ye castles and grapevines, Ye bells so sweet, Ye life along the Rhine, I greet ye with my whole heart! Here fairy tales still rise From the dark waters of the river, The roses still breathe forth A scented glow here; The fiddles, the bright ones, Still call to the roundelay, And merry comrades They sing thereby. As scent from the grapevines, As sunny wine, A life still blooms here, So innocent and pure; There still bloom women, Men so righteous, Who trust and build, A powerful lineage. We joyful carousers Drinking golden wine, We fill the goblets: Three cheers for the Rhine! Ye castles and grapevines, Ye bells so sweet, Ye life along the Rhine, I greet ye with my whole heart!
