Strahlte einst ein süßes Bild;
Nun das süße Bild erblichen,
Bin ich gänzlich nachtumhüllt.

Wenn die Kinder sind im Dunkeln,
Ist beklommen ihr Gemüth,
Und um ihre Angst zu bannen,
Singen sie ein lautes Lied.

Ich, ein tolles Kind, ich singe
Jetzo in der Dunkelheit;
Ist das Lied auch nicht ergötzlich,
Hat's mich doch von Angst befreit.

Brilla un jour une douce image;
Maintenant, cette douce image estompée,
Je suis tout enveloppé de nuit.

Quand les enfants sont dans le noir,
Ils ont l'âme angoissée,
Et pour éloigner leurs peurs
Il chantent  une chanson a voix haute.

Moi, fol enfant , je chante
Aussi dans l'obscurité;
Si ma chanson n'est pas aussi délicieuse,
Elle m'a au moins libéré de la peur.
