Language: German (Deutsch)
Our translations:  ENG FRE
Gesanglos war ich und beklommen
So lange Zeit - nun dicht ich wieder!
Wie Tränen, die uns plötzlich kommen,
So kommen plötzlich auch die Lieder.

Melodisch kann ich wieder klagen
Von großem Lieben, größerm Leiden,
Von Herzen, die sich schlecht vertragen
Und dennoch brechen, wenn sie scheiden.

Songless was I
(Sung text translation for setting by L. Lehrman)
 See original
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
Songless and oppressed was I
So long - now once again I versify!
And just as, suddenly, to us come tears
So, suddenly, do also songs appear.

Again I can lament melodically
Upon great loves, and woes more great,
And hearts that never can agree,
And yet break, when they separate.

Note: the text above is taken from stanzas 1-2 of the original text.
