Des stolzen Männerlebens schönste Zeichen 
Sind Flamme, Donner und die Kraft der Eichen.
.  .  .  .  .  .  .  .  .  .  .  .  .  .  doch
Nichts mehr vom Eisenspiel, und nichts vom Bliz der Waffen!
Der ew'ge Friede ward uns zugewendet,
Dem Schlafe ward die Kraft der Faust verpfändet.
.  .  .  .  .  .  .  .  zwar –  ...  jüngst noch
Haben wir das  ...  Schwert geschwungen,
Und kühn auf Leben oder Tod gerungen;
Jetzt aber sind die Tage hohen Kampfs verklungen
Und was uns blieb aus jenen Tagen,
Es ist vorbei, bald sind's - ach! nur noch Sagen!!

Sont les flammes, le tonnerre et la force du chêne
........................ Mais 
Rien ne surpasse le jeu de l'acier ni le jeu des armes.
La paix éternelle nous a été accordée
La force du poing a été engagée pour dormir.
..........  Il y a peu 
Nous brandissions l'épée
Et fièrement nous luttions pour la vie ou la mort.
Mais maintenant les jours des combats éminents se sont évanouis.
Et ce qui nous est resté de ces jours
Est parti, bientôt, hélas, il y aura seulement des contes.
