Weide, silbern Angesicht

Weide, silbern Angesicht,
Wenn ich dich von weitem sehe,
Leidet's mich und hält mich nicht,
Bis ich grüßend vor dir stehe.
Heut! -- Und oh, wie manches Jahr
Kam ich, Weide, dich befragen!
Denn ich wußte: Frühling war,
Wenn du wieder ausgeschlagen.
Jahr um Jahr dieselbe Tracht.
Eh sich die andern bemühen,
Weidenbaum bist aufgewacht
Und beginnst alsbald zu blühen.
Ich verspür die Wandlung kaum,
Und sie hat dich schon durchdrungen;
Gülden überm Silberflaum
Künden mir die tausend Zungen.
Botschaft, Jahr um Jahr erneut:
Frühling kam, die Welt geht offen!--
Weide, die mein Herz erfreut:
Wer ums Wunder weiss, lernt hoffen.

Willow, silver-faced one,
When I see you from afar,
I suffer and cannot restrain myself
Until I stand before you in greeting.
Today! -- And oh, as in many a year,
I came, willow, to consult you!
For I knew: it was spring
When you had greened up again.
Year upon year the same garb.
Before the others take any trouble,
Willow tree you have awoken
And immediately begin to bloom.
I hardly perceive the transformation,
And it has already penetrated through you;
Golden over silvery down
The thousand tongues proclaim it to me.
Message, renewed year after year:
Springtime came, the world opens! --
Willow that gladdens my heart:
He who knows about the miracle learns to hope.
