Willow, silver-faced one, [Because]1 I see you from afar, I suffer and cannot restrain myself Until I stand before you in greeting. Today! -- And oh, as in many a year, I came, willow, to consult you! For I knew: it was spring When you had greened up again. Year upon year the same garb. Before the others take any trouble, Willow tree you have awoken And immediately begin to bloom. I hardly perceive the transformation, And it has already penetrated through you; Golden over silvery down The thousand tongues proclaim it to me. Message, renewed year after year: Springtime came, the world opens! -- Willow that gladdens my heart: He who knows about the miracle learns to hope.
