by Tu Fu (712 - 770)
Translation by Launcelot Alfred Cranmer-Byng (1872 - 1945)

Exile
 (Sung text for setting by G. Bantock)
 Matches original text
Language: English  after the Chinese (中文)
Through the green blinds that shelter me
Two butterflies at play --
Four wings of flame whirl joyously
Around me and away;
While swallows breasting to the shore
Ripple the waves they wander o'er.

And I that scan the distant view
Of torn white clouds and mountains blue
Lift to the north my aching eyes;
'Tis there -- 'tis there the city lies!
Chang-an arise! arise!

Composition:

    Set to music by Granville Ransome Bantock, Sir (1868 - 1946), "Exile", published 1933 [ voice and piano or orchestra ], from Songs from the Chinese Poets: Set VI, no. 3

Text Authorship:

  • by Launcelot Alfred Cranmer-Byng (1872 - 1945), "In exile", appears in A Feast of Lanterns, first published 1916
