Language: German (Deutsch)
Our translations:  ENG FRE
Ich habe, bevor der Morgen
  Im Osten noch gegraut,
Am Fenster zitternd geharret
  Und dort hinaus geschaut.

Und in der Mittagsstunde,
  Da hab' ich bitter geweint,
Und habe doch im Herzen:
  Er kommt wohl noch, gemeint.

Die Nacht, die Nacht ist gekommen,
  Vor der ich mich gescheut;
Nun ist der Tag verloren,
  Auf den ich mich gefreut.

Avant qu'à l'est
 (Sung text translation for setting by R. von Hornstein)
 See original
Language: French (Français)  after the German (Deutsch)
Avant qu'à l'est
Le jour ne soit levé
J'ai attendu en tremblant à la fenêtre
Et regardé au loin.

Et à l'heure de midi
J'ai amèrement pleuré,
Pourtant mon cœur disait
« Il va bien venir ».

La nuit, la nuit est venue,
Devant elle j'ai eu peur ;
Maintenant il est perdu ce jour,
Dont je me réjouissais.
