Des Sängers Abschied
See original

The beautiful beloved in his heart, upon his lips a song,
Into the distance, the far distance the minstrel travels;
, but his spirit is fresh . . .
You faithful heart, may God protect you on your journey!
Upon the mountain, high up in the sunbeams of morning,
There he gazes back once more into the valley.
The city, how it shimmers through the trees along the river,
The city that has only one campus prison, but a thousand taverns!
Garlanded with vine leaves, a house stands at the city gate.
From it, ... furtively, a maiden peeps out.
She folds her hands in immense pain,
And quietly weeping, she sends prayers heavenward.
