Auf dem Berge hoch oben im Morgensonnenstrahl,
Da sieht er noch einmal zurück in das Thal.
Am Strome durch Bäume wie schimmert die Stadt
Die Stadt, die nur ein Karzer, doch tausend Schenken hat!

Von Weinlaub umzogen am Thore steht ein Haus
Da schauet verstohlen ein Mägdelein heraus.
Sie faltet die Hände vor übergroßem Schmerz
Und sendet Gebete stillweinend himmelwärts.

Note provided by Johann Winkler for stanza 5, line 2, word 7: "Schmollis" is an obsolete student-slang word, used in student parties, meaning an offer or exhortation to drink to fraternity.
