Das Todtenopfer
 (Sung text for setting by W. Rust)
 See original
Language: German (Deutsch)
Our translations:  FRE
Die Berge stehn so düster,
Von Nebeldunst umflort;
Durch banges Rohrgeflüster
Rinnt schwach das Bächlein fort;
Ein fernes Hirtenfeuer,
Am grauen Fichtenhain,
Hellt matt der Dämmrung Schleyer,
Wie Leichenfackel-Schein.

 ...

Des Traurenden Gedanken
Entschweifen bang dem Schooß
Der Alpenwelt, und wanken
Um ferner Gräber Moos.
Tief ist die Ruh' der Grüfte;
Der Morgensonne Licht,
Das Wehn der Frühlingslüfte,
Weckt ihre Schlumm'rer nicht.

O Freunde! deren holde
Gestalten, mildumstralt
Von blassem Abendgolde,
Mir die Erinnrung malt:
Fünf Kränze von Platanen
Bringt, hier am Felsaltar,
Die Sehnsucht euren Manen
Zum Todtenopfer dar.
