Abendstunde

Und vor der Hütte auf dem Stein 
Saß er an ihrer Seite,
Und mancher lange Seufzer gab 
Den worten das Geleite.

Er sprach aus ferner Jugendzeit,
Er sprach aus fernen Landen,
Er sah es nicht, wie weit und breit 
Die Sonnenstrahlen schwanden.

Da schrak er auf -- da horcht' er auf --
Was mag der Klang bedeuten? 
Und aus der Tiefe steigt herauf 
Des Klosters Abendläuten! 

"Lebwohl, lebwohl!" -- Er war so traut 
Zur Seiten ihr gesessen.
Daß tief da drunten ein Kloster lag,
Er hatte es tief vergessen!
