Wir wandern hin, wir wandern her, von Berg zu Berg, von Meer zu Meer; wir sind verlassen, heimatlos! Doch Gott gelobt, die Welt ist groß! Wir leben unterm Tannengrün, wir leben, wo die Palmen blüh'n und finden überall nur Not. Komm bald, ach, letztes Abendrot! Mein Vater trägt schon graues Haar, ich stütze seinen Schritt; ich bring' ihm mein Erspartes dar, geh' bis zum Grabe mit. Ich zünd' ihm in der Höllennacht die Fackel an, die freundlich lacht; so wandeln wir, treu in der Not, und harr'n aufs letzte Abendrot.
