Es reitet schweigend und allein Der alte Graf zum Wald hinein. Er reitet über Stein und Dorn, Zur Seiten schlendert Schwert und Horn. Und immer düstrer wird die Bahn, Wie raget Fels an Fels hinan. Zu einer Mühle kommt er da, Doch ist kein Leben fern und nah. Zerfallen sind die Gänge all, Kein Mühlrad treibt der Wasser Schwall. Durch's offne Dach der Himmel schaut, Getrümmer rings und Wucherkraut. Nur eine Bank erblickt er drin, Drauf setzt der düstre Gast sich hin. Verschränkt die Arme auf der Brust, Und schließt das Auge unbewußt. Da wird's lebendig um ihn her; Die Werke poltern dumpf und schwer. Das Wasser braust, es lebt der Hain, Das Mühlrad klappert lustig drein. Und sieh, mit Säcken ein und aus Kommt Knecht um Knecht durch Saus und Braus. Vom Mühlgang, erst noch leer und wüst, Der Müller freundlich nieder grüßt. Jetzt fliegt den Steig herab im Sprung, Sein Töchterlein, gar frisch und jung. Das Antlitz wie der Himmel klar, In Flechten tanzt ihr schönes Haar. Das nah't dem Grafen und kredenzt Das Glas, d'rinn flüss'ges Gold erglänzt. Wohl fühlt da, wie in alter Zeit, Sein Herz der Liebe Seligkeit. Und auf das Kind den Blick gewandt, Hinstreckt er nach dem Glas die Hand. Doch wie nach ihm er greift mit Hast Da ist's nur Luft, was er erfaßt. Verschwunden ist so Glas als Wein, Der Müller und sein Töchterlein. Kein Mühlrad geht, kein Wasser braust, Der Wind nur durch's Gebälke saust. Und wieder auf den Rappen dort Wirft sich der Graf und reitet fort. Er reitet stumm den Wald entlang, Und streift ein Thränlein von der Wang'.

Silencieux et seul chevauche Le vieux duc vers la forêt. Il chevauche au-dessus des pierres et des épines, À son côté se balancent son épée et son cor. Et toujours plus sombre est le chemin, Alors que se dressent falaise après falaise. À un moulin il arrive là, Mais il n'y a aucune vie près ou loin. Tous les accès sont effondrés, Le flot de l'eau n'entraîne aucune roue. À travers le toit ouvert on voit le ciel, Des ruines tout autour et des herbes folles. À l'intérieur il voit seulement un banc, Le sombre invité s'assoit dessus. Il croise les bras sur sa poitrine Et ferme les yeux inconsciemment. Alors tout devient vivant autour de lui ; Le mécanisme gronde sourdement et pesamment. L'eau rugit, le bosquet vit, La roue claque joyeusement. Et regardez, avec des sacs entrent et sortent Valet sur valet avec grand fracas. De l'entrée du moulin, jusque là vide et désolé, Le meunier envoie son salut amical en bas. Maintenant vole dans l'escalier en bondissant Sa petite fille si fraîche et jeune. Son visage est clair comme le ciel, Sa belle chevelure danse avec ses tresses. Elle s'approche du duc et offre à boire Un verre dans lequel brille un liquide doré. Comme dans l'ancien temps, il ressent Dans son cœur le bonheur de l'amour. Et le regard tourné vers l'enfant Il tend sa main vers le verre. Mais quand il l'atteint avec hâte Ce n'est que l'air qu'il attrape. Ainsi ont disparu le verre et le vin, Le meunier et sa petite fille. Aucune roue ne tourne, aucune eau ne rugit, Seul le vent se rue à travers les poutres. Et à nouveau sur son cheval noir Le duc se jette et s'en va. Il chevauche en silence à travers la forêt Et essuie une larme sur sa joue.
