Fortune plango vulnera
stillantibus ocellis,
quod sua mihi munera
subtrahit rebellis.
Verum est, quod legitur:
fronte capillata,
sed plerumque sequitur
occasio calvata.

In Fortune solio
sederam elatus,
prosperitatis vario
flore coronatus;
quicquid tamen florui
felix et beatus,
nunc a summo corrui
gloria privatus.

Fortune rota volvitur:
descendo minoratus;
alter in altum tollitur;
nimis exaltatus
rex sedet in vertice -
caveat ruinam!
Nam sub axe legimus:
Hecubam reginam.

Lloro las heridas de la Fortuna
con ojos lacrimosos,
porque sus favores 
insidiosa me arrebata.
Es verdad lo que se lee
del pelo en la frente,
pero luego es 
la ocasión calva.

En el trono de Fortuna
elevado me sentaba,
de la prosperidad 
con las flores coronado.
Y tanto como florecí
contento y feliz,
desde lo alto caí,
de gloria despojado.

Gira la rueda de Fortuna,
desciendo humillado
y otro es levantado.
Elevado en exceso,
el rey en la cumbre
se cuide de la ruina,
pues bajo el eje leemos
que es Hécuba la reina.
