Ich ging an deiner Seite
In einem Buchenhaine;
Ein störendes Geleite
Ließ nimmer uns alleine.
Und mußten wir zurücke
Ins Herz die Worte pressen,
Uns sagten unsre Blicke,
Daß wir uns nicht vergessen.
Und sehn wir uns nicht wieder
In diesem Erdenleben,
Dich werden meine Lieder
Verherrlichend umschweben.
Das Bächlein trieb hinunter
Der Wellen rasche Tänze,
Und rauschend flocht und bunter
Der Herbst der Wehmut Kränze.
Doch aus des Walds Verdüstern,
Den Stimmen des Vergehens,
Hört' ich die Hoffnung flüstern
Des ew'gen Wiedersehens.

Dans un bois de hêtres ;
Un compagnon dérangeant
Ne nous laissait jamais seuls.
Et nous devions serrer
Les mots dans nos cœurs,
Et nos regards disaient
Que nous ne nous oubliions pas.
Et si nous ne nous revoyions pas
Durant cette vie sur terre,
Les louanges de mes chants
Flotteraient autour de toi.
Le ruisseau descendait, précipitant
La danse rapide des vagues,
Et coloré et grondant, l'automne
Tressait des couronnes de mélancolie.
Mais dans l 'assombrissement de la forêt,
Dans les voix du dépérissement,
J'entendais murmurer l'espoir
De retrouvailles éternelles.
