Herbstlied

Rings trauern die Entlaubten,
Vom kalten Wind durchweht,
Die Tannen nur behaupten
Ihr dunkles Grün so spät.

Wenn's Vöglein baut sein Lager,
So grünt das Tannenreis
Und grünt, wenn's Wild sich, hager,
Scharrt Wurzeln aus dem Eis.

Die Buche seh ich schwinden
Im Froste, lebenssatt,
Wie sie den kalten Winden
Hinwirft das letzte Blatt.

Zu meiner Seele Trauer
Die Buche besser stimmt,
Daß sie den Winterschauer
Sich so zu Herzen nimmt.

Seuls maintenant les sapins maintiennent
Aussi tard leur sombre verdure.

Lorsque l'oiseau construit son nid,
Les rameaux du sapin sont verts,
Et verts lorsque le gibier maigre
Gratte les racines sous la glace.

Je vois tituber le hêtre
Dans les frimas, las de vivre,
Tandis que les vents froids
Jettent au loin sa dernière feuille.

À l'affliction de  mon âme,
C'est le hêtre qui s'accorde le mieux,
Car l'horreur de l'hiver
Le saisit aussi au cœur.
