Willst du Gottes Wunder schauen,
Seiner ew'gen Weisheit Spur,
Steige in der Tiefe Grauen
Ohne Furcht und Zagen nur.
Schau' die unterird'schen Dome,
Und die Pfeiler von Basalt,
Wo nicht Lichtglanz und Arome,
Nacht und Grau'n dich nur umwallt.
Mag das Herz auch anfangs pochen
Ob des Todes grauser Näh',
Kommt der Schauer auch gekrochen
Bleichend dir die Wang' zu Schnee.
Muthig nur durch Nacht und Schwaden,
Nur die Kühnheit bricht sich Bahn.
Und der Glaube ist der Faden
Der zum Ziel dich führen kann.
Zitt're nicht, wie wild und wilder
Auch das Labyrinth sich wirrt,
Und noch nie geseh'ne Bilder
Vor's erschrockne Aug' dir führt.
Laß die wilden Wasser brausen,
Und dem Schwaden seinen Zug.
Laß der Tiefe ihre Grausen
Und den Klüften ihren Trug.
Zieh' getrost nur immer weiter
Durch die Wunder dieser Nacht.
Denn es ist ja dein Geleiter
Der die Wunder hat gemacht!

Descent into the mine

If you wish to see God’s wonders,
The trace of his eternal wisdom,
Only descend into the horrors of the depths
Without fear and trepidation.
Look upon the subterranean cathedrals,
And the columns of basalt,
Where neither the glow of light nor scents
But only night and dread flow about you.
Even if the heart may pound at first
Because of the horrid nearness of death,
Even if dread, too, comes a-creeping,
Paling your cheek to snow[,]
Only courageously onward through night and vapours,
Only boldness carves a path for itself.
And faith is the thread
That can lead you to your goal.
Do not tremble, however wildly and more wildly
Convoluted the labyrinth becomes,
And causes images, never seen before,
To pass before your startled eyes.
Let the wild waters roar,
And let the vapours go their way.
Leave the depths to their horrors
And the chasms to their deception.
Only pass confidently ever onward
Through the wonders of this night.
For He who is your guide
Created all these wonders.
