Unmuth
Language: German (Deutsch)
Wolken lasten trüb und schwer,
Nebel steigen aus den Föhren.
Trübe schleich’ ich hin und her,
Auf des Windes Lied zu hören.
Altes Leid tritt vor mich hin,
Das ich längst begraben dachte;
Und es will mir nicht zu Sinn,
Daß das Glück mir jemals lachte.
Kommt ein Vogel da geflogen,
Singt mir zu: "Laß ab zu zagen!
Flögst, wie ich, am Himmelsbogen,
Sähest du’s schon wieder tagen."
Wie er’s singt, um seine Schwingen
Zittert schon ein goldner Schein,
Und die alten Götter dringen
In die Seele wieder ein.

Discontent
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
Clouds rest drearily and heavily [upon the pines],
Mists rise from the pines.
Dully I creep hither and thither
To listen to the song of the wind.
Old sorrow returns to stand before me --
[Sorrow] I thought long buried;
And I am not able to fathom
That good fortune ever smiled upon me.
A bird comes a-flying then and
Sings to me: "Leave off your apprehension!
If you flew, as I do, along the arch of the heavens,
You would see it dawning anew."
As it sings thus, around its wings
A golden glow already trembles,
And the old gods enter
Once more into my soul.
