Da wo der frühen Falter gelbes Lodern
Um wild Gestrüpp am Bergeshange zückte,
Und Bäche quollen durch verjährtes Modern,
Verweilten wir, die Glückes Last erdrückte.
Wie von des Meisters Hand entfesselt Erz
Goß sich die Kraft der Sonne auf uns nieder,
Sie stürzte rot durch unser schlagend Herz
Und wuchs wie goldne Haut um unsre Glieder.
Nun ist mir so, als ob dort oben bliebe,
Den Elementen kund und zugesellt,
Unsterblich eins: das Strahlenbild der Liebe,
Indessen wir, Staub ohne Sinn and Dauer,
Der vor der Stunde blindem Schlag zerfällt,
Hinunterstiegen in das Tal der Trauer.
