Der Heimweg

Auf laub'ger Bahre trägt man mich von hinnen;
Ich fühle Blut von meiner Stirne rinnen,
Das tröpfelt spielend auf der Blätter Grün,
Und macht, daß sie schön purpurrötlich blühn;
Die Knappen schreiten leise mit mir fort
Als wie zum stillen, seel'gen Friedensport;
Der Herrin Bild lacht freundlich mir im Inneren,
Ein ewig süßes himmlisches Erinnern;
Wird's Tod, wird's Leben, mir ist's einerlei;
Doch schöner sah ich nie als heut', den Mai.

The way home
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
Upon a leafy bier they bear me from there;
I feel the blood running from my brow,
It drips playfully upon the green of the leaves
And makes them bloom with beautiful crimson;
The lads tread quietly as they carry me away
As if to the silent, blissful port of peace;
The image of my mistress smiles graciously within me,
An eternally sweet, heavenly remembrance;
Whether I die, whether I live, it is all the same to me;
But I have never seen May be more beautiful than it is today.
