Toujours notre Madone Est là, levant sa main, Entre le ciel qui tonne Et les blés du chemin : Dans l’herbe haute assise, Au salut des passants, Elle n’a point d’église , De cierges ni d’encens. Sous le toit d’aubépines, Qui lui sert de palais, L’oiseau chante matines Dans l’arbre pur et frais. Les enfants du village Sont ses anges élus, Et les bruits du feuillage Lui sonnent l’angélus ! Son regard sans colère Parle au cœur repentant ; Son doux silence éclaire L’aveugle qui l’entend ; Un pauvre l’a trouvée Au fond du ravin creux; Et Dieu l’a conservée Aux autres malheureux! Prenez pour confidente Sa charité sans voix ; La voix la plus prudente Nous trahit quelquefois : Dans son chaste mystère, A l’abri des regrets, Au-dessus de la terre Enfermez vos secrets ! Quand sur ses pieds de reine J’ai mis mon front brûlant, Je sens veine par veine Couler un calme lent; Filles de Notre-Dame , Dormez sur ses genoux ; Pour élever votre âme, Elle en sait plus que nous !
