Wir sind am Bach gestanden
Language: German (Deutsch)
Available translation(s): ENG
Wir sind am Bach gestanden,
verschlungen Hand in Hand,
mit unsern stillen Augen
dem Flusse zugewandt.
Da kamen weiße Kinder
in einem milden Schein;
sie trugen schöne Kränze
und drehen sich im Reihn.
Sie locken und sie winken,
sie flüstern tief und viel,
da waren wir nur Kinder
und waren mit im Spiel.
Wir drehen uns und singen
erst eine gute Zeit;
dann fliegen wir selbander
hinauf zur Ewigkeit.

We stood at the brook
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
We stood at the brook
hand entwined with hand,
with our quiet eyes
turned toward the river.
White children came
in a gentle glow;
they wore beautiful wreaths
and twirl about in the dance.
They entice and they beckon,
they whisper profoundly and much,
then we became mere children
and joined in their game.
We twirl and sing
for a goodly time at first;
then together we fly
up to eternity.
