Da ich von dir auf ewig schied,
stand fühllos und blass der Mond am Morgenhimmel da.
Nichts quält mich schrecklicher seit jenem Morgen,
als wenn ich in der Frühe müd erwacht,
in fahler Dämmerung den Mond glanzlos ich hängen seh.
So, wie die Wasserlinsen auf dem Fluss ganz wurzellos
und ohne jeden Halt hierhin und dorthin ziehn,
so treib, so treib auch ich dahin,
haltlos, so haltlos im Strom meiner Lieb´,
meiner Liebe!
