Ardo in tacito foco,
neppure m'è concesso
dal geloso cor mio
far palese a me stesso
il nome di colei ch'è 'l mio desio,
ma nel carcer del seno
racchiuso tien l'ardore,
carcerier di se stesso, il proprio core
e appena sia contento
con aliti e sospiri
far palese alla lingua i suoi martiri.
Se pur per mio ristoro
con tributi di pianto
mostrar boglio con fede
a quella ch'amo tanto
che son d'amor le lagrime mercede,
ecco 'l cor ch'essalando
di più sospiri il vento,
assorbe il pianto e quell'umor n'ha spento
e con mio duol m'addita
che gl'occhi lagrimanti
sono mutole lingue negli amanti.
Qual sia l'aspro inio stato
ridir nol ponno i venti,
neppur le selve o l'onde
udiro i miei lamenti,
ma solo il duol entro al mio cor s'asconde
e quale in chiuso specchio
disfassi pietra al foco,
tal io m'incenerisco a poco a poco,
e s'ad altri la lingua
è scorta alla lor sorte,
a me la lingua è sol cagion di morte.

Le cœur qui empêche la langue de révéler le nom de sa bien‑aimée

Je brûle d'un feu silencieux
et il ne m'est même pas permis
par mon cœur jaloux
de révéler à moi-même
le nom ce celle qui est mon désir,
dans la prison de mon sein
il garde son ardeur enfermée,
geôlier de lui-même, mon propre cœur,
et à peine il se satisfait
avec des souffles et des soupirs
pour révéler à la langue son martyre.
Si même pour mon repos
avec des tributs de pleurs
je veux montrer de bonne foi
à celle que j'aime tant
que les larmes sont la récompense de l'amour,
voici mon cœur exhalant
un vent de nombreux soupirs
absorbe mes larmes et cette humeur maintenant passée
et avec ma douleur me montre
que les yeux pleins de larmes
sont les langues muettes des amants.
Combien est amer mon état
les vents ne peuvent le dire,
car les forêts ou les ondes
n'entendent mes lamentations,
mais seul le chagrin se cache dans mon cœur
et comme dans un miroir refermé
il éclate comme un pierre dans le feu,
ainsi je me réduis en cendres peu à peu,
et si pour les autres la langue
escorte leur destin,
pour moi la langue est la seule cause de ma mort.
