Un monjo està a la seva cel•la darrere la grisa reixa de la finestra, nombrosos cavallers, en brillants armadures, cavalquen per la prada. Ells canten cançons pietoses en un bell, magnífic cor, entremig, feta de delicada seda, oneja la bandera dels croats. A la riba del mar pugen a bord del gran vaixell que salpa enllà, damunt la verda ruta i que aviat sembla com si fos un cigne. El monjo està encara a la finestra i els esguarda allà fora: “Jo sóc també, com vosaltres, un pelegrí, tot i que no surto de casa. El viatge de la vida travessant ones enganyoses i la brusent sorra del desert, és també una croada vers la Terra promesa.”
