Sie singen Lieder frommer Art

Inmitten fliegt, von Seide zart,
Die Kreuzesfahn' empor.

Sie steigen [an dem]4 Seegestad'
[Das hohe]5 Schiff hinan.
[Es]6 läuft hinweg auf [grünen]7 Pfad,
Ist bald nur wie ein Schwan.

Der Münich steht am Fenster noch,
Schaut ihnen nach hinaus:
»Ich bin, wie ihr, ein Pilger doch
Und bleib' ich gleich zu Haus'.

Des Lebens Fahrt durch Wellentrug
Und heißen Wüstensand,

La croada

Un monjo està a la seva cel•la
darrere la grisa reixa de la finestra,
nombrosos cavallers, en brillants armadures,
cavalquen per la prada.

Ells canten cançons pietoses
en un bell, magnífic cor,
entremig, feta de delicada seda,
oneja la bandera dels croats.

A la riba del mar pugen
a bord del gran vaixell
que salpa enllà, damunt la verda ruta
i que aviat sembla com si fos un cigne.

El monjo està encara a la finestra
i els esguarda allà fora:
“Jo sóc també, com vosaltres, un pelegrí,
tot i que no surto de casa.

El viatge de la vida travessant ones enganyoses
i la brusent sorra del desert,
és també una croada
vers la Terra promesa.”
