Een monnik staart vanuit zijn cel Door 't grauwe tralieraam. Veel riddervolk met wapens hel, Dat rijdt daar af en aan. Zij zingen lied'ren, vroom en vrij, - Een ernstig koorbetoog, - In 't midden waait, van zachte zij, De kruisbanier omhoog. Hij ziet hen aan de lage ree Het hoge schip in gaan. Dan vaart het weg op groene zee, Lijkt weldra slechts een zwaan. De monnik staat aan 't venster nog, Kijkt hen al peinzend na: "Ik ben, als gij, een pelgrim toch, Al blijf ik waar ik sta. De levenstocht langs klip en scheer, Door brandend woestijnzand, Het is een kruistocht evenzeer Naar het beloofde land."
