Ohne Schmuck und Perlenglanz
Laß mich auf die Stufen legen,
Stumm erflehend deinen Segen,
Meiner Jugend welken Kranz.
Kämpfe, Fahrten, Wunden viel,
Ungenossene herbe Siege
Ruhmlos durchgekämpfter Kriege
Finden müde nun ihr Ziel.
Lüste bunt und freudefarb
Senken müdgewordene Hände,
Ihr Gelächter ist zu Ende,
Ihre rote Flamme starb.
Sterbend, blaß und fieberwund
Wollen sie, der Welt vergessen,
Müd auf harte Stufen pressen
Den verblühten Liebesmund.

Without adornment and the radiance of pearls
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
Without adornment and the radiance of pearls
Let me lay upon Thy steps,
Mutely pleading for Thy blessing,
The wilted wreath of my youth.
Battles, journeys, wound a-many,
Bitter victories, not enjoyed,
Of inglorious wars I fought through,
Now wearily find their goal.
Passions rejoicing in many joyful colours
Lower their hands that have grown tired,
Their laughter is over,
Their red flames have died.
Dying, pale and worn by fever
They, forgetting the world, wish
To press their loving lips
Wearily upon the hard steps.
