Soir d'été

Le soleil brûlait l'ombre, et la terre altérée
Au crépuscule errant demandait un peu d'eau ;
Chaque fleur de sa tête inclinait le fardeau
    Sur la montagne encor dorée.

Tandis que l'astre en feu descend et va s'asseoir
    Au fond de sa rouge lumière,
Dans les arbres mouvants frissonne la prière,
    Et dans les nids : bonsoir ! bonsoir !

Pas une aile à l'azur ne demande à s'étendre,
Pas un enfant ne rôde aux vergers obscurcis,
Et dans tout ce grand calme et ces tons adoucis,
    Le moucheron pourrait s'entendre.
