by Robert Burns (1759 - 1796)
Translation by Wilhelm Christoph Leonhard Gerhard (1780 - 1858)

Jockey's taen the parting kiss
Language: Scottish (Scots)
Jockey's taen the parting kiss,
O'er the mountains he is gane,
And with him is a' my bliss,
Nought but griefs with me remain,
Spare my Love, ye winds that blaw,
Plashy sleets and beating rain!
Spare my Love, thou feath'ry snaw,
Drifting o'er the frozen plain!

When the shades of evening creep
O'er the day's fair, gladsome e'e,
Sound and safely may he sleep,
Sweetly blythe his waukening be.
He will think on her he loves,
Fondly he'll repeat her name;
For where'er he distant roves,
Jockey's heart is still the same.

Liebchens Trost
Language: German (Deutsch)  after the Scottish (Scots)
Abschiedskuß und Scheideblick!
Über die Berge zog er weit;
Ach! mit Jockey schwand mein Glück,
Sorge blieb mir nur und Leid.
Gönnt ihm heitres Sonnenlicht,
Raubt ihm, Wolken, keinen Stern;
Schnee und Regen, netzt ihn nicht,
Wilde Stürme, bleibet fern!

Wenn des Tages goldnen Schein
Dunkler Abend überschleicht,
Schlaf' er sanft und ruhig ein,
Und erwache froh und leicht!
Denken wird er Nacht und Tag,
Denken mein in Freud und Schmerz;
Denn wie weit er streifen mag,
Nur daheim ist Jockey's Herz!

Confirmed with Robert Burns' Gedichte. Deutsch von W. Gerhard., Leipzig, Verlag von Joh. Ambr. Barth, 1840, page 197.

Note: in many older editions, the spelling of the capitalized word "über" becomes "Ueber", but this is often due to the printing process and not to rules of orthography, since the lower-case version is not "ueber", so we use "Über".
